mimecast

How does mimecast decide to block something? It seems a bit random.

The behavior seems random to humans: an email from Rodent High reaches your inbox on Monday but on Tuesday mimecast blocks another one.

Do not assume mimecast is blocking an email based on the sender alone. The information used to decide to block an email goes far beyond what is in the header. If you want to know why an email is blocked, send a quick email to FW. They will research it for you.

Size Limit is 25MB

Gmail will not accept attachments that are executable files (.exe, .cmd, .bat, etc.).

Surely mimecast knows if an email is dodgy or not; or does it just guess and ask me to decide?

You’re not thinking like a computer. Mimecast does not KNOW what is dodgy. It’s using an inhuman amount of data+speed to give each email a dodginess score.

  • high dodginess – simply blocks it
  • medium dodginess – asks you
  • everything else – passes into your inbox

FW provides us with our mimecast. It’s their job to monitor and adjust how it’s working. If it’s doing something that does not make sense to you, contact FW. Don’t allow mimecast to make you feel powerless.

Are emails automatically blocked by mimecast or only after we designate them?

mimecast automatically blocks emails for many reasons, such as senders from domains with bad reputations and senders who misrepresent their identity. The emails you reject are a small subset of those that are blocked.

What really happens when I'm choosing "block," "release" or "permit" regarding an incoming message?

Once a day mimecast sends a digest email with a list of the questionable email you’ve received. You are asked to rule on each of these emails.

  • Permit – release to my inbox and put sender on my personal permitted (“trusted”) list
  • Release – release to my inbox
  • Block – add sender to my personal blocked list

This guide explains the details of mimecast digest email.

Are we notified of every incoming email that does not make it to our inbox ?

No, a lot of clearly malicious email is blocked by mimecast. Mimecast does not notify you about these.

I don't see an email that I'm expecting. What can I do?

Provide FW with the email addresses of the sender and the receiver, and the date it was sent. They can do some investigation. If mimecast blocked it; it can be found.

Sometimes when mimecast informs me of a held message it says "Contact your administrator for further information." What am I supposed to do?

If you don’t want the email, ignore it.  If you want it contact FW and ask them to release it.

What should I do with an email in my inbox that mimecast should have blocked?

Spell check in Gmail

There is no automatic spell check in Gmail. The browser (Chrome, FireFox) may have auto-spell check which will kick in when you are composing Gmail.

Using spell-check in Gmail (non-automatic)
while composing a Gmail message, look for “more options”, near trash can. Click “Check spelling”

check your Gmail storage space

Your individual contacts hold old DCM entries even when they no longer exist. Clean out old “dupagechildrens” entries in your DCM contacts list to clean your autocomplete offerings.

To Clean Contacts

  • Go to “Contacts” (it is in the list of Google Apps such as Gmail & Calendar)
  • On the left there is “Contacts” and “Directory”
  • Select “Contacts”
  • Search on “dupagechildrens”
  • select all that come up and delete(you still have active ones in your directory; as you use those they will appear in your contacts)
